Did a cutout the other day.

Filled 3 medium boxes with brood comb and bees.
Bees seem well adjusted to their new box in my yard.
45 lbs of honey strained so far (and still slowly dripping)
I think when they settle down in a few days and I can tell the queen is laying, I'll split them. Huge colony.

I took 6 stings on this cutout and one the following day when I checked on them. I think this is the most stings I've had at one time. We removed the colony a bit late in the evening and when the girls returning from the field entered what used to be their home, the found themselves inside a room in a building with bright (and hot) lights shining and people moving around and nowhere for them to go. They were quite ornery.
ReplyDeleteNotes to self for future cutouts:
Finish removal during the day.
Seal the entrance first (if you can) so the returning field bees will cluster at the entrance for easy vacuuming up at dusk.
